Pier to Pier race report

Run reports
What better way to spend a sunny Sunday than a trip to the beach? ??However our 10th league race meant we took our running shoes rather than bucket and spade. After the usual late arrivals (whoops ?), forgetting numbers and quick dash home the Striders bus was on its way to the Pier to Pier. We met many more fellow Striders in South Shields as once again we were out in force. Chris showed his usual relaxed attitude by eating a bacon butty 30 minutes before the start. To most people that would mean leaving more than just footprints on the race route. ? The Pier to Pier is an odd race where for part of the way you choose your own route. Qu weeks of people trying to find…

Gail’s Hamsterley 10k

Run reports
Gail Robinsons race report from Hamsterley 10k.... Well I did say I would write the run report for the Hamsterley Forest 10k so here goes. Firstly I apologise for the delay; a certain BBQ and a trip to Wembley kinda got in the way. However, being late with the report means I can mention the latest results to come from the event, but let's start at the beginning... Ben & I chose to enter this event only a few weeks ago, it sounded lovely; a trail run through Hamsterley Forest, I imagined running 'through' the forest but no, we ran along a road and back! To make it feel different the road was gravel tracks in parts. I also imagined maybe having to navigate my way around the odd tree…

Mermaid 10k race report

Run reports
There was another superb turn out and heaps of pb's at our 7th league race. The Mermaid 10k started just behind the Mermaid pub in Marske. Beginning with 2 laps of the housing estate, goodness knows what the locals thought when they saw a few hundred people flying past their houses. ? It soon moved on to the coast road towards Redcar for 2 laps of the prom and coast road. Safe to say there was mixed reviews of the course, but one thing we can all agree on is how fast it was. The hard training paid off with some massive pb's by some and others pleased to see their official times had taken a few seconds off theirs - they all count just the same.?? The race was…

Runners Pilates

Club News
Whilst we are still endeavouring to set something up at Striders (we are still waiting on room availability etc) Mike Jeffries who was going to facilitate has sent this and asked if we can share ..... Runners Pilates: designed to improve core strength and endurance in the specific ranges of movements to running. Unlike boot camp etc. this class will not over stress the athlete but it will enhance running technique and form, helping maintain it to the end of a race. A similar class in Peterlee has been a big success amongst the local runners. Classes start on Monday 06 March from 8pm to 9pm at Northfield School and will be £4 per session. If you can post here if interested so Mike has an idea on numbers ....

Richmond NYSD XC race report

Run reports
The last real XC race of the NYSD series was at the old racecourse in Richmond. The race runs around the racecourse perimeter with a few short sharp hills up to the old grandstand ruins and one gentle, but what seemed like never ending, slog of a climb along one side.  A strong headwind made this even more challenging - is it ever not windy at this race?? We had extremely dry conditions meaning only one proper patch of mud for the mud fans - a big contrast from Summerhill 2 weeks ago. A clear day and high location gave stunning views over North Yorkshire and Teesside for those brave enough to look up from avoiding the constant rabbit holes and mole hills. The rest of us got to admire…

NECAA Royal Signal Road Relays

Run reports
Striders had another brilliant team event at the NECAA Royal Signal Road Relays. 2 teams of 4 ladies and 6 men ran 2.2 miles each through Hetton Lyons Country Park in Hetton-le-Hole.  It was a lovely course with just one tricky hill and another, according to Sam and Cat, not a hill - certainly felt like one at the end of the second lap!   Jackie was dedicated to team Striders running on her trip home from Dubai. Michelle and Tom ran their first Striders team event… hope you’ll be back from more guys!   There was superb running from everyone and equally good team spirit. A cool wind picked up later in the afternoon giving the men’s teams an extra challenge to content with. Special mention has to go…

Summerhill Cross Country

Run reports
Summerhill lived up to its name with some long hills in the 6th race of the NYSD Cross Country series on Sunday 5th Feb. There were unusually mild conditions for one of the toughest but fun races of the series. With some tough climbs and streams to cross the super muddy and slippery course was certainly a testing one. Despite this, and some close calls, all Striders managed to stay on their feet to put in some excellent performances. The ladies team finishing in a fab 4th place Andrew Laverick, Michelle Livingstone and Sarah Winter ran their first XC for Striders and safe to say their shiny new spikes didn’t stay that way for long. Sprint finish race of the day goes to David Horton and his close call with…
